Knights of Columbus Council 10961 February 2020 Knight of the Month
Joseph (Joe) P. Weibel
Joe was born in March 1931 during the Depression and Dust Bowl era in Strantton, CO. After graduation from Strantton High School in 1949, he joined the Knights of Columbus. Shortly thereafter Joe enlisted in the USAF and served during the Korean War Conflict from 1950-54. After his discharge from the Air Force, Joe worked in the oil industry, starting out as a sales clerk for National Oil Well Supply and ultimately worked his way up to a district manager, retiring in 1997 after 43 years in the oil industry.
Joe married his wife Doris in Cortez, CO in 1957 and has six children, 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Joe and Doris after several geographical relocations with National Oil Well Supply, moved to Broomfield, CO in 1984 and they immediately became involved with Nativity of Our Lord Parish and the Broomfield community. Joe, along with Brother Knights, spent many evenings and weekends remodeling the basement of the old parish center. Pancake breakfasts became a Joe Weibel specialty.
After retiring from National Oil Well Supply in 1997, Joe became involved with the Broomfield Senior Center Wood Shop and began his new career of woodworking. Joe’s woodworking skills are displayed throughout the parish, rectory, convent and Frasatti House. The ambo and priest’s podium near the altar are works of Joe, as well as the large case holding the stained glass of the Holy Spirit from the old church that now resides in the gathering area of our parish. The Memorial Crosses annually honoring deceased parishioners displayed on the north wall inside the church and many of the picture frames and bookcases throughout the parish facilities, and the Knights of Columbus podium are all gifts of Joe’s talent. Joe also designed and made the kiosk in the gathering area that hold all of the Knight’s Domestic Church booklets. The crowning jewel of Joe’s contribution to Nativity of Our Lord is his supervision of the beautiful tabernacle housing our Lord in the monstrance that is in the Perpetual Adoration Chapel of the Three Patrons.
Joe was quite active in the local community as well, serving four separate terms as the president of the over-55 active senior Gate ‘n Green Community HOA. Joe also served as the president of the Broomfield Senior Center for 6 years and the wood shop supervisor for 17 years. Joe also was one of the seven founders of the Broomfield Military Veterans Museum and served a term as president of the museum. While serving as president, Joe was one of the originators of what are now the Annual Broomfield Veterans Memorial Day Picnic and also the Annual Veterans Day Program. Finishing second in the 2015 Broomfield Dancing with the Stars highlighted Joe’s community involvement.
It is with great honor to acknowledge Joe Weibel as the Knight of the Month for February 2020. His name will be submitted to the State Council for consideration as the Colorado State Knight of the Month for February 2020.
